About Microneedling

What is microneedling? How does it work?

Microneedling, also known as percutaneous collagen induction (PCI) or collagen induction therapy (CIT), is a minimally invasive skin perfecting procedure. During treatment, six premium, high-quality microneedles create pinpoint penetrations, promoting a collagen-stimulating healing process. We utilize the Candela Exceed microneedling device which is a mechanical microneedling system for treatment of wrinkles, acne scars, minor stretch marks, and overall skin rejuvenation.

The Exceed is the first FDA-cleared, dual-indicated medical microneedling device offering clinically proven outcomes. These treatments are highly recommended over only using skincare products because this service provides an individualized treatment solution to repair and restore your skin, naturally. The general rule of thumb for the average client is 4 treatments spaced every 4 weeks apart.

FAQs

Treatment with the Exceed system is customizable and minimally invasive, suitable for healthy men and women. In only 4 treatments, 90% of patients saw an improvement in facial wrinkles and 86% of patients showed significant improvement in their facial acne scars. The treatment is well tolerated with minimal pain, discomfort or downtime, all in under an hour.

People not eligible for treatment are history of keloid scarring, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, blood clotting conditions, auto-immune disorders, active bacterial, viral, or fungal infection, pregnant, active acne or open lesions in treatment area(s). We will ensure a thorough consultation to ensure you do not have any contraindications prior to treatment.

After the topical anesthetic is removed and skin is prepared for treatment, a soothing serum/gel is applied to assist with needle movement and enhance procedure with beneficial ingredients. Your professional will have one hand holding the Exceed microneedling pen and the other holding the skin taut to ensure proper penetration. As treatment progresses and different are being treated, more serum will be applied. Pinpoint bleeding and erythema is to be expected during treatment and will be wiped with sterile gauze and saline immediately after treatment. More serum will then be applied to the skin.

Immediately post treatment, the localized pin-point bleeding should subside within 5-10 minutes of treatment. Pain or discomfort may occur with gradual cessation following the treatment. Transient mild to moderate erythema (redness) and edema (swelling) can last for up to 3-6 days. The skin's appearance can resemble a moderate sunburn.

You may also feel tightness and mild sensitivity in the area(s) being treated which will diminish greatly after a few hours following treatment, and within the next 24 hours the majority of skin will be healed. Other inflammatory responses such as itching, residual warming, flaking or peeling can occur and will typically subside within 5-8 days of treatment. See all pre and post care instructions below.

For the average client, we recommend a series of 4 treatments every 4 weeks to achieve desired results. Then occasional maintenance sessions are recommended to ensure long-term results, anti-aging, and overall skin health. For more advanced cases, more sessions may be needed to notice results.

With this minimally invasive treatment, little to no downtime is required. Aside from the few pre and post care instructions such as avoiding sun and heat, you can resume your normal daily activities almost immediately after treatment. It is recommended to take what we like to call “social downtime,” meaning no makeup or strenuous activity (sweating) for at least 3 days following your treatment.

  • Avoid sun exposure 4-6 weeks before and after treatment.
  • Avoid exercise, strenuous activity, or overheating the body at least 1 hour before treatment.
  • Your provider may ask you to stop any active or harsh ingredients in your skin care products or certain medications 3-5 days prior to treatment.
  • See list of contraindications in the link below
  • For the first week and until completely healed, cleanse the treatment area with an unscented gentle cleanser and pat dry, do not rub.
  • Avoid wash cloths, harsh irritants, and scrubs.
  • Avoid any exercise, strenuous activity, or overheating the body for at least 48 hours after treatment.
  • The treated area should be kept as hydrated as possible
    for one-week post treatment.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure to the treatment area and gently pat in a sunblock of at least SPF 30
or higher at all times for at least one month following the procedure and/or thought the course of your treatments.
  • Do not pick at the treated area. It is imperative to let the area heal on its own. If the area is picked at and further interruption
of the epidermal layer occurs, this can increase the risk of infection, PIH (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation), and other post treatment complications.
    • Contact us if you have any concerns about how your skin is responding
to the treatment or is healing.
